Allow for software evaluation period using time, date or usage expiry. Enable the fullversion by password or keyfile. Build different levels of functionality into your product. Protection is provided by a small redistributable COM object for VB, VBScript, VC, Delphi etc. The password creation app (LicenseCreate) is an easy to use Windows application, but it can also be driven from the command line (for 3rd party vendors), or scripted (for integration with an existing COM savvy customer database)
